Another year, another list of acronyms to get to grips with. Forget FOMO (fear of missing out, in case you’ve been living under a rock since 2011), now we have to deal with FOMOMO – that’s fear of the mystery of missing out. Confused? Here’s our quick guide to 2016’s acronyms...
FOMOMO – Fear of the mystery of missing out.
This is basically extreme FOMO. It’s when you're afraid of missing out, not because of what you see on social media, but because you’ve lost your phone, or it’s out of battery, and you can’t see what everyone’s doing. Suddenly your imagination runs wild! In your mind, they’re all having the best time without you. In reality though, they’re all at home watching Netflix.
MOMO – Mystery of missing out.
Having friends who constantly post about where they’ve been, what they’re doing and who they’re with can get irritating, but at least you know what they’re up to. It’s when they post nothing at all that MOMO kicks in. Where are they? What are they doing? And with who? Not you – and therein lies the mystery.
FOJI – Fear of joining in.
I want to post, but I don’t know what to post. What if no one ‘likes’ it? What if no one follows/friends/connects with me? Easier not to post anything at all. Better still, I’ll just boycott social media altogether. Sound like you? Then you’ve got FOJI.
BROMO – When your bros protect you from missing out.
If your mates have been on a night out without you but agree not to post any pictures or updates about it in case they make you feel bad – that’s BROMO. Not quite sure if this makes them real friends or not?
SLOMO – Slow to miss out.
Sorry, if you’re SLOMO then you are in fact missing out. This is when you go to bed, enjoy a good night’s sleep, but wake to find Facebook/Twitter/Instagram littered with pics and status updates about the awesome time your mates were having while you were sleeping.
JOMO – Joy of missing out.
If you’re happy to stay home with a glass of wine and a good book/box set without feeling the need to constantly check what everyone else is up to, then congratulations, you’ve got JOMO.
